How do you connect to the land?

Join artist Ella Mahoney from the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, Storyteller and artist Denise Silva-Dennis from the Shinnecock Nation and Doug Schmid from the Friends of the Hempstead Plains as we explore the history of the land the museum sits on, the people who have lived here and our connection to it.

  • Hear traditional indigenous origin stories, and children are invited to share stories of their own.
  • Create naturally dyed silk scarves which will become part of a larger pieces of art at LICM.
  • Learn about the history of indigenous use of the resources the land provides.
  • Plant native plants both for LICM’s garden and to take home!

Weather permitting, all activities will take place in our outside gallery Our Backyard. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.
